On a flight covered by EU261, a Wizz Air arrival delay of at least 3 hours may qualify for €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, subject to the remaining conditions and no valid extraordinary-circumstances defence. For Serbia → EU, check whether Wizz Air Hungary or Wizz Air Malta actually operates the flight; Wizz Air UK is a different entity with a separate UK framework. Meals, a necessary hotel and reimbursement after a departure delay of at least 5 hours have separate conditions.
- The three-hour compensation threshold uses arrival, not the first notice of a late departure.
- Wizz Air Hungary, Wizz Air Malta and Wizz Air UK should not be treated as one EU carrier.
- WIZZ credit, ticket reimbursement, necessary expenses and fixed compensation are different claim items.
Wizz Air flight delayed: what should you do at the airport?
Check the latest message and booking status, then ask Wizz staff or its ground-handling representative about expected departure and the cause. At Belgrade or Niš, keep both app messages and what you were told at the gate. Repeated changes to departure time make the original schedule particularly important: save it before the app displays only the revised time.
Continue meeting check-in, security and boarding requirements. A delay announcement does not mean you can arrive at the airport later or leave the gate without checking. Ask for necessary assistance now; the final compensation assessment follows once actual arrival is established. The main flight delay guide explains the common conditions; below are the Wizz differences relevant to journeys to and from Serbia.
Wizz Air flight delayed? Check possible compensation.
Which Wizz Air company operates your flight from Serbia?
Find the full legal name beside “operated by” on the confirmation. Wizz Air’s company information lists Wizz Air Hungary, Wizz Air Malta and Wizz Air UK separately. Hungary and Malta are EU carriers; UK is not an EU carrier. A shared brand, aircraft colour or booking website does not remove that distinction. Keep any later notice changing the operating carrier as well.
| Flight and operating carrier | What to check |
|---|---|
| EU → Belgrade or Niš, any Wizz operating company | EU261 covers EU departure, subject to the remaining conditions. |
| Serbia → EU, Wizz Air Hungary or Malta | EU261 can cover an inbound flight operated by an EU carrier; Article 3 conditions still require assessment. |
| Serbia → UK, Wizz Air UK | Do not apply EU261 amounts without assessment; national and separate UK rules are relevant. |
| Illustration: Serbia → Turkey, Wizz Air Hungary or Malta | This direct route has neither EU departure nor EU arrival; the carrier’s EU establishment alone does not bring it within EU261. |
For Serbia → EU, Article 3 requires an EU operating carrier and the remaining conditions, including the exception for benefits or compensation and assistance already received in the departure country. The same entitlement is not recovered twice. Iceland and Norway are included through the extended framework; Switzerland has a separate agreement. The UK requires a separate assessment. Serbian citizenship or residence is not an independent basis for EU compensation.
Departure from Serbia also has national protection. However, the Directorate explains that the Serbian delay provision does not refer to fixed compensation in the same way as EU case law. Without a direct EU261 basis, care and reimbursement still require assessment, while a monetary compensation claim needs the appropriate separate basis. The actual carrier’s name is therefore more useful than a general statement that “Wizz flies in Europe”.
When does a three-hour delay qualify for compensation?
EU261 uses an arrival delay of at least 3 hours at the final destination. Arrival is when at least one door opens and passengers are permitted to leave, not touchdown. This and the remaining long-delay conditions are explained in the European Commission guidelines, sections 3.3 and 4.4. The passenger must have an appropriate reservation and meet applicable check-in and boarding requirements; time spent beside a gate is not the whole test.
Illustration: Belgrade → Dortmund, operated by Wizz Air Malta, has scheduled arrival at 17:00 and doors opening at 20:20. If inbound EU coverage, required check-in and the remaining conditions are satisfied, the 3-hour-20-minute delay triggers a compensation assessment. If the doors open at 19:50, the arrival threshold is not met. This example assumes the stated operator and legal coverage; it is not a timetable confirmation or an actual LetKasni case.
Record both arrival times in the same time zone, including the date. Changing terminals, landing and reaching the parking stand do not necessarily establish the legal arrival time. With an alternative airport, completion of the relevant transfer to the booked airport or agreed nearby destination can matter too. Preserve confirmation of what was agreed and when you arrived.
How much is Wizz Air flight delay compensation?
If the flight is covered and the remaining conditions are met, the amount is per passenger, not per booking. Ticket price, a WIZZ Discount Club discount or a baggage add-on does not set the statutory compensation amount. A cheap publicly available fare can therefore carry the same entitlement as a more expensive ticket on the same flight. Free travel and special fares unavailable to the public require a separate assessment.
| Distance and flight type | At least 3, less than 4 hours | At least 4 hours |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 | €250 |
| Within the EU over 1,500 km; other flights 1,500–3,500 km | €400 | €400 |
| Other flights over 3,500 km | May be reduced to €300 | €600 |
The table gives EU261 amounts, not amounts under the separate UK regime. EU261 can also cover an EU departure operated by Wizz Air UK, subject to the remaining conditions. The illustrative Belgrade → Dortmund route is under 1,500 km, so a qualifying EU261 claim belongs in the €250 category, not €600. If that same shorter flight arrives five instead of three hours late, the base amount does not rise simply because of the additional wait. Compensation is separate from reimbursement of necessary expenses.
When should Wizz Air provide meals or a hotel?
For EU261 flights, care depends on the expected departure delay: at least 2 hours for flights up to 1,500 km, 3 hours for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights of 1,500–3,500 km, and 4 hours for remaining flights. Articles 6 and 9 of the Regulation provide appropriate meals and refreshments and two communications. If expected departure is at least the following day and an overnight stay is necessary, hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and accommodation are included.
For departure from Serbia with only a national legal basis, Serbian Article 11 categories apply: two hours up to 1,500 km, three hours for flights within the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) of 1,500–3,500 km, and four hours for remaining flights. Niš and Belgrade do not have different rights simply because of airport size. The route, distance, legal framework and actual wait matter, alongside the needs of passengers with reduced mobility and children.
Ask the handling representative for assistance before paying yourself. If it is unavailable, record the request, response and reasonable available options, then retain receipts for necessary expenses. Wizz’s guidance requests invoices for meals, accommodation and transfers. An ordinary meal voucher is not cash compensation or an automatic waiver of it. Extraordinary circumstances may exclude fixed compensation while appropriate care remains due.
Five-hour refunds: money, credit or continuing the journey?
After a departure delay of at least 5 hours, you may decide not to continue and request the relevant reimbursement. It is not always limited to one segment: unused portions, used portions that no longer serve the original plan and a return to the first point of departure can be relevant. The statutory reimbursement period for that option is 7 days; it is not a deadline for paying every compensation claim.
If you continue and use the flight, do not assume you automatically receive a full ticket refund as well. For a pure EU261 delay, reimbursement and return differ from the full statutory rerouting choice after cancellation. Wizz may offer particular rebooking options too; keep the wording and check what you are accepting. If the original flight is abandoned, different rules are explained in the Wizz Air cancelled-flight guide.
WIZZ account credit is different from money in your bank account. A voucher cannot be imposed instead of statutory EU reimbursement or compensation without your free and informed agreement. However, not every previously purchased or promotional credit automatically converts to cash. Keep the original payment, credit origin, conditions and accepted offer. Understand which claim items a settlement closes before accepting unclear terms.
A missed onward flight: was it one booking?
Do not assume that two Wizz flights or a purchase through the same website form a protected connection. Where flights genuinely form one connected journey covered by EU261, arrival at the final destination may matter even if the first segment was less than three hours late. The complete booking, responsible carriers and legal coverage require assessment, not just the shared brand name.
With separate tickets, a delay to the first flight does not usually create an automatic duty for that carrier to pay for the missed second ticket. An intermediary’s separate guarantee or travel insurance may have its own conditions. For onward travel from Belgrade or through an EU airport, keep both purchase confirmations, any connection time presented to you and offered replacements. The missed-connection guide explains why a single purchase and separate tickets do not always produce the same result.
When can Wizz refuse fixed compensation?
A valid EU261 defence requires more than writing “extraordinary circumstances”. Wizz must establish an event not inherent in normal operations and beyond its actual control, its link to the particular delay and the reasonable measures taken to avoid the result. Severe weather, air-traffic-control restrictions and security events may satisfy that test; each requires a factual assessment.
An ordinary fault, crew shortage or late aircraft rotation does not automatically excuse payment. Technical problems also differ: a hidden manufacturing defect or external event can change the assessment. A Wizz staff strike differs from an air-traffic-control strike. Where delay to a previous flight is cited, its actual cause and knock-on effect need to be established rather than assuming the whole day is automatically excused.
A useful rejection should allow verification: where the event occurred, when it lasted, which flight or aircraft it affected and what was then done. LetKasni can connect those statements to the documents and assess what remains unexplained. This does not mean every rejection should be challenged or every delay produces payment.
What should you keep for a Wizz Air delay claim?
Prepare one journey record with clearly identified attachments. For departure from Serbia, keep local airport correspondence as well as original Wizz messages, even if the claim is later handled in English. Do not alter dates, overwrite the original document with a translation or submit only a cropped message that hides the carrier and route.
- Booking confirmation: full operating-carrier name, passengers, all flights and original schedule.
- Travel and arrival evidence: boarding pass or other confirmation, date and actual time at the final destination.
- Cause and care: Wizz notices, handling representative’s response, what was requested and offered.
- Money and claim: itemised receipts, accepted credits or settlements, submitted claim and case reference.
For several passengers, distinguish who claims compensation and who paid a shared bill. Representation requires appropriate authority; a reservation in your account is not automatic permission to dispose of every adult companion’s rights. The detailed claim document guide helps with preparation.
How do you submit a Wizz Air compensation claim?
Wizz Air’s claim-submission guidance directs passengers to an online form and the appropriate category. Fixed compensation, ticket reimbursement and necessary expenses should be clearly separated. Submission produces a unique ID, with status available under “Your Claims” in the WIZZ Account. Keep the reference and a copy of what was sent; opening the same complaint repeatedly does not speed processing because Wizz merges duplicates.
Wizz states a target of handling requests within 30 days. That is not a guaranteed payment date or a universal statutory deadline for every country. If there is no response, check spam too and follow up in the existing thread using the same reference. The company’s full name, flight and date should match the booking, particularly when passengers refer to all group companies simply as “Wizz”.
Wizz’s published EC261 procedure states that a passenger should claim directly before third-party processing and requires authority documents. It also says this does not prevent prior advice. Before a case is taken on, the applicable conditions of the actual Wizz company, any earlier submission and representation method therefore require checking. Do not sign duplicate assignments of the same claim or submit parallel claims without disclosure.
LetKasni can take on assessment of the legal basis and documents, claim preparation, communication and responses to a reasoned or generic rejection in an accepted case. Passengers can receive support in Serbian or English with clear agreed terms beforehand. The value is an organised case and appropriate procedure, without promising that every flight qualifies or a case takes a fixed number of days.
Wizz rejects the claim or stays silent: what comes next?
First check whether the reply actually addresses your claim. Rejection of fixed compensation does not automatically resolve hotel invoices, just as a refund response may not decide compensation. An extraordinary-circumstances defence calls for verifiable facts and reasonable measures. When supplying more information, keep the existing reference and identify the unresolved item clearly.
For the Serbian procedure, the Directorate specifies a 90-day period for complaining to the carrier, running from the actual or scheduled flight date. If the complaint is not satisfied or no reply is received within 60 days of complete documentation being delivered, a breach can be reported to the competent Directorate. This does not apply to every foreign procedure and is not a general court limitation period. Wizz’s 30-day target and the Serbian 60-day period are different rules.
For an EU or UK case, the appropriate regulator or ADR provider depends on the route, carrier, membership and case eligibility. Not every Serbian passenger automatically qualifies for the same foreign body simply because Wizz links to it. A regulatory complaint does not guarantee recovery of an individual payment; where necessary, a separate recovery procedure must be assessed. Deadlines depend on the country and claim type.
Frequently asked questions about Wizz Air delays
Does a two-hour wait mean cash compensation is due?
Not by itself. Two hours may trigger care on a shorter flight; fixed EU delay compensation requires arrival at least three hours late and the remaining conditions. A short first-segment delay can still matter on a protected connection.
Can I receive a refund and Wizz Air compensation for the same disruption?
They are different rights, but each needs its own basis. If you abandon travel after five hours, the refund alone does not establish the arrival condition for fixed compensation. Cancellation has different conditions; any signed settlement also requires assessment.
Does every child receive the same amount?
Compensation is per qualifying passenger, but each child’s ticket, fare and coverage conditions require checking. Do not promise the same result without assessment for an infant travelling free or on a special non-public fare.
I no longer have a boarding pass. Is it too late for an assessment?
Not automatically. Keep the booking, messages and other confirmation that you actually travelled and submit them for an eligibility assessment. Additional documents may be needed.
